Installation Instructions

Surface Preparation:

Before you begin the installation of your decal you need to prepare the surface, this is critical for optimum decal adherence. Vinyl decals can be applied to any smooth, non-porous surfaces as long as the surface is thoroughly cleaned of contaminates. All dirt, oil, grease, and wax must be removed. To do this, wipe the surface to be applied with isopropyl alcohol and a clean, lint free cloth. Cleaning the surface with isopropyl alcohol will also clean any residue that soap and water would leave behind. After you have wiped the surface down with isopropyl alcohol, dry the surface with a clean lint free cloth.

Temperature

When installing vinyl decals it is best to do it in a temperature range of 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and never at a temperature below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If possible apply your decal in a garage or other covered area to keep dirt from landing on your work area or the adhesive side of the decal. Also do not install in direct sunlight.

What makes up a vinyl decal?

A vinyl decal consists of three parts. The top layer is what is known as transfer tape. Transfer tape can be clear or brown like masking tape and is used to transfer the decal from its liner to the object you are installing it on. The second layer is the actual decal itself. The third layer is a paper or plastic liner that is used to protect the adhesive surface of the decal. Once the decal is installed the liner and transfer tape are discarded.

Tools:

Small decals can most likely be installed will little or no tools but for larger decals we recommend the following tools to help your installation.

  •  Plastic Squeegee or credit card will work.
  • Tape Measure or ruler.
  • Masking tape.
  • Razor Blade or scissors.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol or Glass Cleaner without ammonia.
  • Lint free towels
  • Application fluid.

Installation:

There are many ways to install decals. Below we will show you how to install small and large decals as well as dry application vs. wet application.

Dry Application on small decal:

To install small decals measure the decal to the position you want and place a piece of masking tape along the top edge.

Lift up the decal from the bottom side and remove the paper liner from the back of the decal and discard.

Slowly lower the decal down onto the surface and press from the middle of the decal down. Move from the middle of the decal to one side and press the decal onto the surface. Return to the middle and work your way to the other side of the decal.

Once the decal is in place go over it one more time working in all directions to make sure the decal is firmly bonded with the surface and that there are no air pockets in the decal.

Remove the layer of masking tape from the top of the decal.

Remove the layer of transfer tape from the surface. The decal should stick to the surface and the tape should come up clean. If you are having trouble and the decal is still stuck to the transfer tape, press the tape back down and use your squeegee to firmly press the decal one more time before trying to remove the tape again.

Once you remove the tape your decal installation is complete. If you did not smooth all the air bubbles out of the decal and a few remain you can remove them by popping the air pocket with a needle and smoothing that area out again.

Sectional Dry installation of a large decal:

In this installation we will show you how to install a large decal in sections which allows for easier installation. The first step of this process is to measure the placement of the decal and tape it into place by placing a strip of tape on both ends of the decal and one down the middle section as pictured below.

The next step is to remove the masking tape from one side of the decal and separate the transfer tape and decal from the liner.

Once separated use a pair of scissors or a razor blade to remove the section of the liner below the side you lifed up.

Starting from the center of the decal press down the side of the exposed decal onto the applied surface. Start from the center and work your way outwards towards the end of the decal while moving up and down also. This will ensure a smooth application.

Next remove the remaining masking tape and remove the liner from the second half of the decal.

Starting from the center and working your way outwards, apply the decal to the surface. Once the decal is applied go over the decal again with your squeegee to ensure the decal is smooth and firmly adhered.

Remove the layer of transfer tape from the surface.

Your decal installation is now complete.

Wet installation of a large decal:

In this installation we will show you how to install medium to large decals using a wet application. This method lubricates the decal allowing placement to be adjusted before finally adhering the decal to the surface. The first step of this application is to measure the placement of the decal and place a strip of masking tape along the top edge to hold its placement.

The next step of the installation is to fold the decal up and remove the liner from the back of the decal.

Next spray the back of the decal as well as the surface it is going to be applied to down with vinyl application fluid. The application fluid will lubricate the surface allowing for a smooth install while not degrading the adhesive on the back of the decal.

Fold the decal back over onto the surface and press with your squeegee starting from the center and working your way outwards. Press firmly to remove as much application fluid as possible.

Dry the area with a towel and let stand for 15-20 min.

Go over the decal once more with your squeegee then remove the masking tape.

Remove the transfer tape from the surface and discard.

Your decal installation is now complete.
